Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research, Kauri Dieback Program (KDP)
To compare the comparative efficacy of disinfectants; bleach (hypochlorite), halogenate tertiary amine (Trigene II Advance / Sterigene), active oxygen, and citrus-oil against P. agathidicida PA.
A fully-replicated comparative trial using kill-plates with the disinfectants added to the agar, and then the growth rate of PA measured after a set number of days. Studies of efficacy against zoospore and oospores of PA also studied, and hygiene prescription recommended.
Generation of technical report in 2009, for the Kauri Dieback Joint Agency Response Team. This resulted in 2% of tertiary amine spray being adopted as the preferred management tool for disinfestation of boots and clothes, as it is non-mammal toxic, and bio-degradable. Janola at 5% was also effective, as was Virkon S (active oxygen/peroxide), but both require PPE, and caused bleaching of clothing and deterioration of foot-wear.
