Bat Conservation
Protecting Aotearoa’s Only Native Land Mammal
New Zealand’s endemic bats (pekapeka) are taonga species—rare, vulnerable, and ecologically significant. At Living Tree, we specialise in bat conservation through a combination of field expertise, certified handling and risk assessments, and innovative monitoring techniques. Our work supports both research and protection of bat populations and their habitats.
Our Services
Acoustic Monitoring
We deploy and manage long-term acoustic monitoring systems to detect bat activity, assess population health, and inform conservation planning.
Climbing Inspections
Our qualified tree climbers conduct aerial inspections to identify roost sites, assess habitat risks, and support conservation efforts in forest canopies and structures.
Habitat Creation & Protection
We design and implement habitat enhancement strategies, including artificial roosts, roost translocation support, and protection of natural roosting areas.
Bat Handling & Research
As a DOC-certified bat handler, we safely capture and handle bats for research, health checks and population studies. All procedures follow strict ethical and safety protocols.
Bat Conservation Detection Dog
We work with Hawke, Aotearoa’s first DOC-certified bat detection dog, supporting bat monitoring and risk assessments in complex environments such as wind energy sites, solar developments, and building demolition projects.
